ERNI Reaches New Heights With Enhanced SMC Board-to-Board Adapter

Stretches flexible mezzanine distances from 20mm to 40mm

ADELBERG, GERMANY – July 30, 2008 – The latest SMC Board-to-Board-Adapter from ERNI Electronics is an exciting addition to the extensive SMC 1.27mm (.050") pitch connector line, offering impressive flexibility in its board-to-board heights ranging from 20mm to 40mm in 2mm increments. Available in 12, 26 and 50 pins, the SMC Adapter has male contacts on both component ends, and securely locks into a standard low profile SMT female SMC connector for a robust assembled solution.

The SMC Adapter attachment is further enhanced by the extraordinary design details incorporated into every SMC connector. The required low profile female connectors are specially designed for use with pick & place technology. Secure soldering is maintained with SMT coplanarity of <0.10mm (<0.004") and integrated metal SMT mounting clips for durable mechanical stress relief. To protect the daughter card from handling mishaps, the SMC Adapter can be attached during the end-of-assembly process. Manufactured with high temperature LCP, SMC Adapters have an operating temperature range of -55°C to + 125°C, and are offered in cost-effective antistatic tray packaging.

An Overview of the SMC family

The SMC line of versatile 1.27mm (0.50") connectors offers incredible design flexibility not found in any other comparable connector. Male and female connectors are available in a variety of vertical heights from 8mm board-to-board to 20mm, as well as additional heights of up to 40mm offered by the newly released SMC Adapter. Male and female connectors are also available in right angle design, enabling mating combinations for every type of application including extender cards, perpendicular cards and mezzanine cards. SMT, Pressfit and IDC cable termination options give users the capacity for an optimal assembly design. Also, with precision stamped, dual beam ‘spring style’ female contacts, ERNI guarantees misalignment tolerances of 0.7mm in both the longitudinal and transverse axes, providing users with the flexibility to place multiple mezzanine connectors between two boards. ERNI’s award winning contacts also provide a generous wipe length of 2.5mm, allowing the SMC mated height to be ‘stretched’ with no loss of signal integrity, as well as a minimum of 500 mating cycles. Most styles are available in 12, 26, 50, 68 and 80 positions. The connectors are produced on state-of-the-art, fully automated manufacturing machines at ERNI’s factory in Adelberg, Germany. Due to the high contact density and small housing required, SMC connectors are ideal for compact applications.
