Molex Announces the Development of the DisplayPort™ Interconnect System
LISLE, Ill. – May 5, 2006 – Molex Incorporated (NASDAQ: MOLX and MOLXA) has announced the development of the external DisplayPort* Interconnect System. This system features a small, low profile, user-friendly connector optimized for use in notebook and desktop PCs, and external cable assemblies for connection to LCD TVs and monitors. The connector conforms to all the requirements outlined by the DisplayPort 1.0 Standard from the Video Electronics Standards Association (VESA). With its increased speeds and high density, the external DisplayPort interconnect system will provide support for higher quality audio and display resolution.
The DisplayPort interface standard simplifies display interfaces in computer and consumer electronics systems. It uses a common interface approach for both internal connections, such as interfaces in a PC or monitor; and external display connections, including those between a PC and monitor or projector, between a PC and TV, or between a device such as DVD player and TV display.
Molex has been a significant contributor to VESA and the DisplayPort initiative in particular. The Molex DisplayPort external connector is just another example of Molex's leading edge product design”, said Bill Lempesis, Executive Director of the Video Electronics Standards Association (VESA).
The connector system will consist of 20-circuit, 0.50mm pitch SMT, external receptacles designed with a polarized D-shape mating interface and metal shield for full EMI/RFI protection. In addition, the connectors are designed with four solder pins for added mechanical stability and robustness, as well as a snap-in plastic peg for positive polarization during connector mounting. The connector is considerably smaller than DVI and provides increased performance over DVI. Connectors will be available in the third quarter of 2006.
The cable assemblies will consist of 20-circuit plugs designed for overmolding. Molex will also offer finished cable assemblies, which are easy to connect without need for thumbscrews and will be available in both latching and non-latching versions. The cable assemblies will be available in standard lengths of three and 15 meters in the third quarter of this year.
